The Rose Island - Park and Flood Protection
Actually, the Rose Island is not really an island, but merely a gravel bank on the bank of the Nahe, a tributary of the Rhine. At the end of the nineteenth century it was elevated and planted as a park. Beautiful Wilhelminian style houses on its edge bear witness to the heyday of the spa town of Bad Kreuznach. In 1905 a large rose exhibition was held there - the origin of the name.
Very inconspicuously incorporated are small walls as boundaries for high water. Metal barriers can be inserted into these to protect against flooding in winter. A raised pergola embrakment provides recreation and flood protection. Terraced grounds and a walkway winding along the riverbank connect the spa park and Saline Valley. A number of sculptures can also be found there.
