Philippsruhe Palace Park

Philippsruhe Palace Park

At the end of the 17th century, Count Philipp Reinhard of Hanau decided to build a new Baroque palace with a garden. The construction of the complex, which was based on French models, began in 1701. Even before the construction of the palace began, the creation of a Baroque garden was started, which was supplemented by an orangery in 1720. In the middle of the nineteenth century it was transformed into an English landscape garden by the Swedish master gardener Jens Person Lindahl. With only 8.6 hectares of space, the garden form popular at the time could only be implemented in a reduced design. By the end of the twentieth century, trees and grassy areas had been severely damaged by recreational use - the pond had in the meantime been converted into a roller skating rink. In the course of the State Garden Show in 2002, the park was renovated. Lower parts of the park (former orchards) were transformed into an amphitheater, which is now a popular venue for events. Among other things, concerts but also the performances of the Hanau Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Festival take place there. Today you can see very clearly in the park that the trees have suffered from the drought of recent years. Many crowns are sparse and some have already been severely cut back.
