The cloister in the Carmelite monastery of Frankfurt
As an inner courtyard in the medieval complex of the (former) Carmelite monastery in Frankfurt's city centre, a small quiet garden lies away from the tourist crowds. Characterised by a large magnolia, this inner-city oasis of peace is surrounded by the cloister of the former monastery. The monastery complex was built from the thirteenth century onwards. Around 1500, a new cloister was built to the north of the church, which was painted by Jörg Ratgeb with pictures of the life of Jesus. These (and the pictures of the Order's history in the refectory) are the largest wall paintings north of the Alps. This cloister surrounds this hidden gem of a garden.
