„Herrngarten“ in Darmstadt
The ‘Herrngarten’ is the "Gud Stubb" (the best room) for the people of Darmstadt and a green lung in the heart of the city.
This largest and oldest park in Darmstadt was created in the 16th century with the help of the merging of three larger and several smaller gardens. The Landgravine Karoline arranged for the conversion into an English park in 1766. In 1811, Grand Duke Ludwig I opened the ‘Herrngarten’ to the population and since then it has been a popular destination:
· The green detailed park meadows invite you to picnic, read, laze or meet friends.
· At two spatially separate playgrounds there is an age-appropriate offer for the youngest
· A small pond with the largest fountain in the city brings the detail of water, which is essential for the leisure feeling in this way, into play
· In the park there are some monuments worth seeing - the tomb of the Landgravine Caroline, the Veterans Monument, the Goethe Monument and the memorial stone for Princess Elisabeth. Knowledge about the monuments can be found on site on boards.
· Beer garden atmosphere offers in the warm season a café-restaurant with outdoor gastronomy in the middle of the park.
· On the café grounds is a small bandstand, where promenade concerts take place first in the summer
